Counting time from an ancient wisdom

The Gregorian calendar taught us to see time as a straight line: one day follows another, forward, with no turning back. The Tonalpohualli proposes something different: time functions as a spiral.

In the Mesoamerican worldview, there are five cardinal directions: east, north, west, south, and center. Each day is assigned a cardinal direction, but the union of the four directions is you. You are the center from which the union of everything is experienced.

Why is it a spiral and not a circle?

Because you're no longer the same person who walked through that place/time. You've learned; experience gives you new tools. You return to the same day, but you're now a version of yourself that has evolved.

How to use your calendar

• Hang it where you see it every day, or put it as your wallpaper

• Write down your Tonalli-birthday, the day you were born in Tonalpohualli. You can also add the Tonalli-birthday of those around you

• Each 13-day period has its own ruler Téotl; recognize your energy over time

What does this mean for you?

This 260-day cycle shows you the big picture. A Tonalli reading reveals your exact place within it: your calendar name, your nahualli, and the forces that have governed your energy since the day you were born. With this self-knowledge, you'll have more tools to interact with your reality.
